Looking for an unforgettable day trip from Nairobi that’s packed with wildlife, scenic views, and a touch of serenity? A Lake Nakuru National Park day trip with Sunley Safaris is the perfect escape from the city’s hustle. From the moment we pick you up to the time we drop you back, everything is taken care of – so all you need to do is soak up the experience.

Morning Pick-Up in Nairobi – The Adventure Begins

Your journey starts bright and early. A friendly Sunley Safaris guide will meet you at your Nairobi hotel or residence around 6:00 AM. You can also arrange for a pick-up from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) if you’re flying in that morning. Our safari-ready vehicle is comfortable and equipped for the day’s drive – stocked with bottled water and charging ports to keep your devices ready for those incredible photos ahead.

As we head out of the city, watch the skyline give way to rolling hills and open fields. The drive from Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park is approximately 160 km and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, passing through small towns and scenic countryside.

Scenic Stop at the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint

About halfway into the drive, we make a quick stop at one of the Great Rift Valley viewpoints. It’s the perfect chance to stretch your legs and take in sweeping views of one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes. Don’t forget your camera—this is a moment you’ll want to capture.

Arrival at Lake Nakuru National Park – Let the Safari Begin!

By mid-morning, we’ll arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park, a protected haven known for its breathtaking lake views, vast acacia woodlands, and rich wildlife. After a quick briefing and park entry registration, your game drive begins.

With your experienced Sunley Safaris guide leading the way, you’ll have the chance to spot:

  • The famous pink flamingos along the lake shore
  • White and black rhinos roaming near the acacia trees
  • Buffaloes, zebras, and gazelles grazing in the open plains
  • Towering Rothschild’s giraffes, a species found only in certain parts of Kenya
  • A variety of birds – over 400 bird species have been recorded here!

If you’re lucky, you might even spot the elusive leopard or some lions lounging under a shady tree.

Lunch With a View

Around 1:00 PM, we take a well-deserved break for lunch at one of the lodges inside the park—such as Lake Nakuru Lodge or Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge. These spots offer not only delicious local and international dishes but also panoramic views of the park. You can watch wildlife right from your table!

If you prefer, Sunley Safaris can also arrange for packed lunch boxes, especially for guests who’d like to enjoy a picnic-style meal at one of the park’s designated picnic spots.

Afternoon Game Drive & Scenic Lake Views

After lunch, we set off for a second game viewing session, where you’ll explore different sections of the park. The afternoon light creates a stunning golden glow over the savannah, perfect for photography. This is also when animals become more active, especially near water sources.

Lake Nakuru itself, shimmering in the afternoon sun, is truly a sight to behold. Depending on water levels, you may witness thousands of flamingos painting the shoreline pink, one of nature’s most mesmerizing displays.

Return to Nairobi – Drop-off by Evening

As the sun starts to dip, we begin the drive back to Nairobi. Your guide will ensure you’re comfortable and can even stop along the way if you’d like to grab a snack or stretch your legs. You’ll be dropped off at your hotel or JKIA by around 6:30 PM, wrapping up a full day of adventure and memories.
